What Percentage of Americans Vape?

March 22, 2022

Vaping has taken the world by storm over the last decade. From celebrities to the average person, Americans can't seem to get enough of vapes and e-cigarettes. But what percentage of Americans vape?

This post will go over some vaping statistics in the United States and the recent studies that uncover varying trends among vape users. Comparable vaping stats are not readily available in Canada at the moment, but we thought you might be interested to see what the vaping trends are south of the border

We'll see just how many Americans vape based on age, gender, and more.

How Popular Is Vaping in the US?

The younger population enjoys vaping the most in the country. You can find people vaping on balconies, street corners, concerts, bars, and just about anywhere there are people. From the surface, it looks like vaping is on the rise and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. However, the general overview of vaping shows that usage rates remain low.

According to a 2018 Gallup survey, at least 9% of American adults vape regularly, and at least 15% of adults in America have tried an e-cigarette at least once in their life. Gallup’s 2019 survey found that the percentage of vape of adults who claim to have used an e-cigarette or vape device in the past seven days remains at a steady 6%.

The data also reveals interesting insights about vaping demographics. Looking at the US vaping statistics can give you a better idea of whether this is a fading fad or a permanent lifestyle.

Who Vapes More? Men or Women?

According to a study published by the CDC, men were more likely to vape than women. About 17.8% of adult men claimed to use vapes regularly in 2018. Women fall slightly below men, with only 12.3% claiming to use e-cigarettes or vape devices.

Who Vapes Most by Age Group?

Younger people are more likely to vape than older adults. In 2019, roughly 24% of adults between the ages of 18-29 claimed to use e-cigarettes regularly. Adults under 25 are more likely to have tried using a vape device or e-cigarette in the last 30 days.

The 30-49 age bracket only adds up to about 8%. People aged 50-65 are the least likely to vape regularly, if at all. Only 3% of people 50+ claim to use vape devices.

How Many Cigarette Smokers Vape?

A poll conducted in 2016 found that about 54% of adults who use e-cigarettes also smoke cigarettes regularly. Even today, dual use of cigarettes and vapes is still high among young adults. However, the rate of dual use of e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes has been dropping about .5% every year.

Some 37.9% of current vape users were former cigarette smokers. However, no official study states whether the use of e-cigarettes or vapes correlates with the decline of cigarette smokers.

Indeed, a survey created by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System saw that 44.3% of e-cigarette and vape users had never smoked regular cigarettes before.

What Is the Average Income Level of Vapers?

Income is another factor when measuring vaping statistics in the United States. The 2021 report from Gallup claims that those with an annual income of $40,000 or less were more likely to be regular e-cigarette users. Higher-income households seldom admit to ever even trying e-cigarettes.

The lowest income bracket (10%) is about three times as likely to use vapes as those earning $100,000 per year or more (3%).

What is the Average Education Level of People Who Vape?

Americans with lower education levels are more likely to use vapes or e-cigarettes. Adults with a high school diploma (7%) are almost twice as likely to use e-cigarettes than those with a college degree (3%).

Conclusion

Looking at the data, we can see that the percentage of American adults who vape or have tried using vapes and e-cigarettes has remained steady for the last five years. The numbers may fluctuate slightly but are nowhere near the levels of overuse sensationalized by media reports. Instead, based on the statistics, it’s clear that smoking is on the decline as more people either stop smoking altogether or switch to vaping.
